I’m a bit late to the party, but I figure I should still input my two-cents about the game before I end up with more than a thousand hours.
Among Us is a co-operative whodunit-style group detective game that takes place in a small selection of space and air travel maps.
Groups of 4-15 players have to survive 1-3 antagonists referred to as impostors in the game’s lore. Players will find it to be a cross-platform experience with an in-game chat system for communication with your fellow crewmates. The gimmick is that you’re not allowed to speak outside of emergency meetings and body discoveries.
The game is extremely lightweight with the memory required to load the game being a mere 1 GB of ram. It is, of course, the PC release of a mobile game, but I haven’t found this to be obvious when playing the game without ever having tested the mobile release.
I’ve heard from others who have played both that this version is easier to digest than the mobile version, but I can’t verify this.
The gameplay itself relies heavily on who you are playing with. I like that virtually every part of the experience can be customised by the host running the game. The number of impostors, the kill cool down, whether or not the voting is anonymous, etc… If you’re lucky enough to find a game where you’re not banned from immediately, the gameplay typically ranges from 5 to 30 minutes. I can see why this makes it appealing to mobile users.
My only qualm with the game is the censorship. Censor everything or nothing at all. I still see things getting censored when I have censorship disabled. I’m not sure if these are slurs or things just default blacklisted by the game’s code, but I find it a bit inconsistent. However, this is a tiny qualm and not really indicative of the gameplay so you really shouldn’t factor this in when trying to decide whether or not to play the game.
It’s a good game if you like rapid fire group detective games. I think it knows what it is and does what it needs to very well.
