Completely separate from the recent, inexcusable, decision by Ubisoft regarding some older games, this is a do not recommend. Simply because: the game is just plain bad. This is a very sad, poor attempt at a copy of an Assassin’s Creed game. It’s a glorified phone game port. Don’t make the same mistake I made, just stop after AC2 and its expansions. I remember reading mostly bad reviews about Liberation when it came out for Vita, because many people thought that its linear design is kind of a breach of style for the Assassin’s Creed franchise. After beating all the games in the main series I think that Liberation’s lack of liberation (ha!) has its advantages and helps to keep the player’s focus on the story. Storywise it is safe to say that Aveline’s situation is very comparable to Connor’s in Assassin’s Creed 3, but her character seems more sympathic since she is not so mysterious and uncommunicative as Connor.

Even if we put aside the controversy regarding the shutdown of online features and DLC access for select Ubisoft titles (including this one), Assassin’s Creed Liberation HD is a subpar game. The graphics are pretty, the settings (New Orleans, the Bayou and Chichen Itza) are beautifully rendered and the three persona system is innovative. However, the enjoyment is severely hampered by a boring plot, clunky controls, monotonous sidequests (mostly consisting of kill/collect quests with a minimal storyline tagged on) and mostly forgettable characters. I can only recommend this game to avid AC fans or completionists who want to play through all AC titles.
Assassin’s Creed Liberation centers around a character by the name of Aveline, a woman raised from childbirth as an Assassin whom now struggles to find her way and test her faith and loyalty to the Assassin Brotherhood and her mentor – all while keeping her business afloat.
This game is a remastered version from the original PSVita release. It features MUCH higher resolution textures, some better music cues, and rebuilt lighting to go along with it all. It does, however, still look a tad blocky at times, as is the case with mobile adaptations. I do have to give special mention to the lighting in this game though, as it gave a more impressive, visual look to the game that expanded upon the coloring and fidelity of the game that wasn’t present in the rather monotone PSVita version, which had a more drab appearance and was less colorful.
