It’s pretty good. For the most part it delivers exactly what I wanted when they said they were going to reunite the people who kept Castlevania alive as a franchise between the 1990s and the early 2010s when Konami tried to remake the franchise in to a God of War-like game.It plays well enough, the music sounds exactly like Castlevania without being the actual Castlevania music, there’s plenty of enemies and areas and weapons and items. There’s also a decent amount of side content including a special mode where you can play as (some) of the game’s bosses.
The negatives would be that the game looks really nice when it’s standing still but the lighting is pretty bad and makes everything look crappy and cheap when in motion, and I also think that the game absolutely didn’t need voiced dialogue and I would have absolutely axed the voice cast and used the money to make other aspects of the game better. Also it would have been nice if you could somehow forge certain rare materials at a high cost instead of your only option being to rely on rng.
Game throughout the first half is amazing but the game keeps flaws from older titles for the sake of “tradition” that make it annoying to play. With that the bosses while creative feeling like a cop out as you can beat the game with only 50% of the map explored by almost accident and in a very easy fight that ends with a poorly shot sequence that basically tells you “♥♥♥♥ you buy the sequel if you want to know more.” finally ending with a “gamer over” screen that is the same one you get when you die, after that you can just explore the rest of the map with nothing more to do after.Your first 1-3 hours will be a blast as the game leads you through a castle with amazing enemy designs and well crafted areas. Once you get to a clock tower you defeat a very challenging boss which is two dragons. Here in this was the first flaw of the game I realized, their is no health bars. Now long time fans of the game claim its always been like this, but also it keeps you always on your toes.
The problem is it doesn’t, it makes boss fights your not equipped for insanely challenging, where your always wondering did I miss something? Boss fights your over-equipped for feeling like a just another enemy. (yes I am aware their is technically a piece of equipment that shoes them but by the time I accidentally beat the game I still did not find it). No after beating the dragons in under 2 minutes in a boss fight I was apparently very over equipped for I stumbled my way around the map.
