I loved the series. At first I was hesitant because of the comments. But when I tried, I found out why many other people like it. I loved puzzles, graphics, voice acting. There are quite a lot of jokes. But, probably one of the most important things, this is one of the very few games where I actually cared about and followed the story. The main character, Rufus, does look selfish and, for some, might even seem annoying. But even at the end of the first game, you see that he is more complex than it seems at first. In the third game you learn more about why Rufus is the way he is.

Many people are disappointed with the ending, but, in my opinion, storywise, it is perfect. Besides, with time travel and timeloops in Deponia Doomsday, there are actually many endings, some of which are happier than the others. The good: Crusader kings is as much a story teller as it is a strategy game and the possibilities are endless. Your ruler could be incredibly pious and kind to everyone, or he could be a master seducer who leaves dozens of bastards in his wake.

You could be warmongering savages bent on burning civilization to the ground, or you could build incredible centers of learning and bring in the new era centuries ahead of time. As you play, you get to know your families dynamics. You might have an erratic cousin who causes trouble, or a daughter who gets pregnant, or a son who gets killed. And how you deal with all these situations actually matters.

It really has a way of making you care about the characters which just makes it all the more dramatic when they die of the plague or accidentally inherit the throne of Italy. If you don’t care about the interpersonal politics, then the state politics are just as good. Dealing with insubordinate vassals, declaring wars, building up troops and crushing enemies is all very well fleshed out and dang fun to do. With so much content to play with, its damn near impossible to run out of things to do.
