I’ve played almost all of the best games in the “shmup” genre and this one comes pretty close to the top of my list. This game has extremely unique theming and art and it has some of the best enemy pattern and boss design I’ve ever seen. It also has quite a lot more content than I was expecting.

The soul gathering system may seem a little bizarre, especially for bosses. You can basically skip the second half of every boss if you collect all of the soul items they release. I’m still not entirely sure what the reasoning behind this mechanic is but it gives the player a lot of choice in how they play the game. For example, if a player finds a boss to be too easy, instead of trying to finish the boss as quickly as possible they can try to endure as many loops as they can (when you kill a boss without reaching the soul goal, instead of winning, you fight a harder version of the boss) and then cash out when they feel they can’t survive any longer. I think this system gives the game a lot of replayability since you can always try to get further into a boss or stage.
