There are even small upgrades to more recent additions to Pokemon, and though they’re less noticeable, they’re welcome. Trading with and battling real-life players is similar to the previous generation, complete with one of my favorite features, Wonder Trade, but with a festival-themed site as the base of operations and a variety of item rewards for engaging in multiplayer. There’s also a cool new minigame-style feature called Poke Pelago in which you upgrade a series of small personal islands, one of which makes the tedium of hatching eggs easier (finally) while another works like Super Training. As an avid Pokemon player, the littlest additions did a lot to make doing the things that are still the same in Sun and Moon better this time around.

Older games have previously altered the series in big ways, adding online multiplayer and convenient shortcuts over the years. Sun and Moon go even further, introducing much-needed adjustments to item management, traveling and battling. The games also buck core elements of the Pokémon formula, like gyms and badges, to create a unique experience. These are risky moves to make for a franchise with so much nostalgia behind it, but they all lead to what is the most memorable Pokémon journey in years.

That’s evident from the very beginning, which establishes these games as more serious about their story than their predecessors. The classic narrative of collecting ’em all on the way to becoming regional Pokémon League champion is tweaked: The 11-year-old protagonist, who’s just moved in from the original games’ land of Kanto, must first complete several trials of skill to prove their worth to the region’s strongest trainers. To do so, they must travel across their new home’s four isles and become better acquainted with Alola, its people, its Pokémon and its priorities.

I found these challenges to be a disorienting change of pace at first. How could I gauge my progress when each island has a different number of captains, and each trial has unique conditions? What does taking photos of Pokémon have to do with becoming the very best trainer that ever was? But the trials play a large part in how Sun and Moon reconstructs the Pokémon formula. Their impact on the story is direct, and the diverse gameplay worked in tandem with that story.

This isn’t to suggest that Sun and Moon ignore the most important part of any Pokémon game, however. There are plenty of battles to be fought, whether in the wild or the new Battle Royal feature, against friends and seasoned Alolan champs. This is an excellent thing, because I’ve never loved fighting Pokémon more than I do this generation.

Pokemon Moon Pc Game pre-installed:

That fire Pokémon you loved as a kid? It’s an ice Pokémon now, with a way cooler design to boot. Remember that amazing monster that used a bone as a weapon? It’s a GHOST now. And if you don’t know the first 151? That’s okay, you still get the more awesome versions of beloved creatures from the get-go, all while exploring a virtual eden. It’s a smart compromise that makes the old new again.

The Alola region presents Pokémon-training as part of deeply-rooted tradition. In older games, it never quite made sense for little kids to become dog-fighting nomads. In Sun and Moon, that journey is explicitly a coming of age ritual, and it has been performed through generations of people. Picking a starter monster and acquiring a rival feel less like a Pokémon convention and more like a cultural practice based in history.

That grounded premise, coupled with Pokémon Sun and Moon’s attention to detail, makes the world feel alive. You can hear Pokémon chirp and croak. They hang from trees and scutter about as you make your way through tall grass. Some computer-controlled characters still set out bowls, beds, and toys for their own house-bound pets. The more professional ones use a variety of monsters to help them with day-to-day jobs, like construction or police work. Pokémon don’t feel grafted on here. They feel like a meaningful part of an actual society.

As always, the bulk of these new Pokémon games is spent fighting through turn-based battles. Some start from random encounters. Others you initiate against trainers such as yourself. In the wild, you can capture more creatures to join your starter, with up to six monsters making up a team. Each creature has strengths, weaknesses, and a moveset, along with an overarching elemental affinity. With over 700 Pokémon in the roster, hundreds of potential moves, and 18 elemental types, even veterans might have a hard time keeping track of it all. Sun and Moon lend a helping hand here: once you use a move against a foe, the game’s menu will remind you of effectiveness before you select anything.
