Rance Quest Magnum absolutely stunning artwork, innovative scene transitions, and intriguing visual puzzles. even if you don’t like point-and-click games, gorogoa is beautiful to experience. you get the hang of how it works pretty fast, but it makes you think a little bit eventually. in my opinion it’s not a difficult puzzle game in any way, but its puzzles are interesting and unique and drive a captivating story. the main downside to this game is how short it is and how fast you can get all the achievements, but that’s understandable given the care put into the art and story.
it’s still fun to replay just to experience the story and art again. The first thing you’ll notice about Gorogoa is that it’s gorgeous. The hand-drawn style really catches the eye, and while playing, solving the puzzles feels incredibly satisfying when you get something right. The puzzles themselves increase in difficulty as you play, but they never feel unfair, and I was never tempted to alt-tab out to look for a walkthrough.
Sound design is minimal, but atmospheric and fitting. This is a short game, but well worth your time. I myself went back to finish it three additional times, just because there’s something relaxing about moving the story tiles around and seeing everything comes together. However, I am disappointed there isn’t a bit more extra content. I’d love to be able to unlock something like a developer commentary to learn about the behind the scenes of the game, and and art gallery where you can explore some of the intricate backgrounds of the game. Both are things which shouldn’t tax the devs too much, and would add to the experience a game of “what if I try”. It’s also a nicely drawn game. I like that it’s a peaceful non-addictive puzzle game. Some solutions I can logically figure out. Some things just work by trying things out. I only manage to do a little in each session, but that’s a plus. It’s easy enough to put the game down and resume on another day.
