This was in my backlog for so long mostly because it had no achievements and this is the type of game you would play to get completion. Boy I was stupid for not playing it. It’s great, movement is fluent, setups are interesting and game keeps introducing new mechanics to keep it fresh. There are couple of things I wasn’t really a fun of like how you need to mash attack button so fast that your hands starts hurting after a while in shooter levels or rayman stucking on walls when you want him to go down but nonetheless these are minor hiccups that doesn’t take away from the whole experience.

I used to play this game when I was a kid back in the early 2010s. and I know it says I have only 4 hours on my steam page but if we are taking into account the time I spent on this game as a child, I would have about 20. I am glad I decided to buy it here and begin playing it again. Between the platforming, awesome art style, and soundtrack its just a great game. It is worth your time.

Over the past year, I’ve played through well over a hundred platformers ranging from the Atari 2600 to the modern gen. I honestly needed a proverbial shot in the arm to regain my passion for gaming, so I decided to focus on my favorite genre for awhile. Even so, among the countless platformers that I’ve played, Rayman Origins is near the top. As far as modern, non-indie games go, it absolutely tears through the admittedly small (volume-wise) competition. The “New” Super Mario Bros. series is the Mega Bloks to Rayman’s metaphorical Legos. As in, one of them doesn’t fit / feel quite right while the other is practically infallible.

Rayman Origins is a master class for what I like to call the “floaty” platformer genre. The controls are fluid to the point of absurdity. The developers clearly spent time garnering their own unique feel, rather than simply copying the mechanics of platformers of the past, and it paid off beautifully. Even if the game’s aesthetics weren’t as wonderful as they are, I would still wholeheartedly encourage anyone to pick this up. It doesn’t matter if they’re not a fan of the genre. In fact, this would be a great place to start.

One caveat though. Rayman Legends, the sequel to this, includes about two thirds of the levels featured in this game as “remastered” versions. That makes Legends the better deal monetarily. However, I find that Origins’ level progression flows better than Legends. So actually, just buy both and be enjoy yourself. Because it doesn’t really get much better than this.

Play this game through to the end, and you will find yourself slowly driven mad as you realise the game’s level design is actually a sinister ploy to make you lose your grip, over and over, in your attempt to reach the exit. It might start out with a hand on your shoulder and some encouraging words to help you along, but before you know it you find yourself thrown off the metaphorical cliff as you reset the same stage for the twentieth time in order to bypass the same obstacle, while the game gives you a patronizing pat on the back and asks if you don’t want to just give up already.
