I am a 45 yo father, probably one of the oldest people playing this game. I am a single farther to my Son, who is 14 now. My son got this game for Christmas in 2021 from his uncle, so we installed it on his computer and he started playing. By the end of the week he had 24 hours on this game. This was horrible for me, as it was already hard for me to find ways to spend time with my son, as he is always out with his friends or just watching YouTube. So I decided to make a Steam account and get this game to see if I could maybe play alongside him. This game has ever since brought me and my son closer again and now we actually spend time together outside the house together as well.

The biggest issue I have with the game as of now is the new gun sounds. They just don’t work nor do they have the same punch to it as the original sounds had. Its difficult to know how far someone is and most of the guns sound the same, even after they tweaked the sounds in the last two patches to sound distinct. I had no issue telling what or where someone was shooting. I’ve noticed that I stopped playing all together after the updates and I have put in about 70 hours since the changes. I’ve mostly played vanilla after the recoil change, before the changes I’ve stuck to battlefield servers where its just a giant PvP arena since I didn’t have time to play.

At least then, you would please both sides without having to choose what people want to hear.Anyways, lets talk about the recoil changes. As I said earlier, it does address some of the issues it had before by not curing the issues, but remedy them. With the recoil changes, it did level the playing field by making the recoil patterns easier to learn, but it also loses a lot of the skill ceiling. You can probably get all the recoils down in about an hour, before it took a couple hundred hours to get all the guns. Sure it was quite the investment, but all the other aspects of Rust take a long time to master as well, such as building, which could take hundreds of hours to learn and master all the tricks to it.

Personally thought they were okay as it was more for newer players to use for long range pvp before they got good with automatic weapon spray patterns. Currently, you don’t have many long range fights as you use to so I would say in my experience, it becomes more sniper focus.I’ve also noticed a big inconsistency to weapon damage. Normally you would get 5-6 body shots before dying from an AK, but now it ranges from 3-8 for whatever reason (no headshot damage either). That might also be a reason to why PvP just doesn’t feel good right now. Damage is all over the place and its as if the game doesn’t calculate the damage properly anymore.

Performance in the game has changed a lot and the recent updates have really and I mean really destroyed performance. Sure, they say that performance is fixed, but there’s no reason for my fps to be 180fps two patches go, to 17fps last patch, and now in this patch I’m not even cracking past 117 fps. All they did was change recoil and add trains, how did I just lose out one third of my performance for no reason. I invested into a 5800x3D for this game alone (and at the very least enjoyed that performance for a few months), which got its shins broken. I’ve heard complaints in the past on the subreddit about the random performance hits and after 4 years, I’ve finally experienced it myself.

I suppose the highest point in the game for me was the patch in where they added the combat knife. There were reliable ways to build large compounds, turrets didn’t need electricity and things were pretty alright. You could reliably setup a good offline defense even in small bases with a few turrets. If you plan on offlining someone, you shouldn’t have an easy time, but there’s also the aspect for onlining. If we’re all being honest, onlines are rare unless you’re in a clan, so it doesn’t really have a place in this discussion. Anyways, then they added all sorts of visual handicaps, like Sun glare (why was this added?) and visuals when you’re either too hot or cold.

Then there was the stealth nerf to food/water. Food was and still important when I started the game. Around the time they added horses, they stealth nerfed food and water with no developer notes on it. You would be able to walk around for quite some time with a full bars and a stack of 8 corn, Since that stealth change, you need half a stack (32 corn) to travel the same distance. Speaking of food, personally I was sad the growing system had to change, but I didn’t mind as it adds a new layer to master (not very difficult either).

Rust PC Game pre-installed:

Let’s touch on raiding, offlining now is a lot easier than before. You just need an ore tea and get some MLRS rockets. Before the MLRS and the new military base was added, raiding was pretty easy to do (since everyone only offlined raid). Didn’t take much to raid small to medium size bases. Now with the new inclusion of MLRS, small to medium bases take nothing to raid and even large bases cant last longer than a day. I thought teas were perfectly fine, gave a risk/reward to farmers and helped those with less time on their hands to play Rust, but MLRS just destroyed raiding balance (not like there was much of a balance to begin with). Word of advice, don’t play in maps with a Military base, your base will last longer.

Then there’s the roaming NPCs. A while ago there was a bug where NPCs weren’t spawning in by the roads. The game was lot more fun since farming scrap already had a lot of competition and challenges. There was no need for NPCs to be spawning on roads, but monuments, I was semi-okay with until you find out the NPCs roaming monuments were MP5 NPCs (the hardest hitting NPC). Just why. The fact that the Facepunch also added to a patch that made it so NPCs caused players to bleed after dealing damage just made it worse to farm roads for scrap.

The new semi-automatic changes do feel great. Semi-Automatic Rifles feel like the sweet spot, its a good cheap all rounder, however the M92 got nerfed. The M92 was already a bad weapon after they broke its kneecaps a few years back. Its a weapon that you needed to purchase for a large some of scrap as its the only way to obtain it (outside of airdrops and event crates). There was no reason to use the M92 before and even less reason now. Why make it hard to obtain if its just complete garbage now.

I felt the combat knife patch was where Rust had its highest point of enjoyment, in my opinion and experience. Of course others will have their own opinion to where Rust was the best, but I felt raiding, farming, and pvp was great. Unfortunately the current state of the game just doesn’t appeal to me anymore. There’s so much unneeded additions and changes that were perfectly fine beforehand (again, in my opinion). Even with the terrible visual additions and offline raiding buffs, I didn’t quit the game because I was at least able to enjoy the game in PvP battlefield servers where those weren’t a factor, but now I can’t even enjoy the PvP aspect anymore due mostly to the sound downgrades.
