The game is good; however, I feel it lacks polish and it doesn’t really do anything to justify purchasing it for those who still can play the original.
The original game was a 2003 3D collect-athon platformer originally developed by Heavy Iron Studios and published by THQ. What made the older game so beloved was that it was a good licensed game based off of a very beloved intellectual property. Most licensed games at the time usually were not so good, and made just to solely generate a profit. Heavy Iron Studios and THQ actually put some effort into the title; they understood what makes a good game of this genre, and how to make the game fit the IP.
Now, here we are, Spongebob Squarepants Battle For Bikini Bottom: Rehydrated, developed by Purple Lamp Studios and published by THQ Nordic. There are some tweaks to the characters such as Sandy being able to lasso grab in the air (and multiple times too), and Patrick being able to move a bit faster if you spam his attack button. Other things that were changed were: The flying missile launching robot’s projectile was made much slower, robot’s projectile’s landing spots are now highlighted, and Mr. Krab’s dream can no longer be cheesed like in the original. There are also some questionable changes like: robots cannot be beaten by luring them into goo, and robots cannot be defeated by launching other robots into them. Also worth noting that Clancy Brown still doesn’t reprise his roll, and Spongebob’s voice while launching the cruise bubble doesn’t have that “transmitter” effect anymore. Can’t exactly explain why, but the remaster feels like it’s missing some polish. Everything else is the same.
Does this remaster offer any new content over the original? Just the multiplayer mode, which is pretty boring. Just a mindless beat-em-up that drags on for way too long. The theater is now filled with new concept art for the remaster. That’s about it really. There are stuff in the game’s files that showed Purple Lamp wanted to finish Patrick’s dream, which was cut from the OG game due to time constraints. Guessing time might’ve repeated itself.
Again, the remaster is good. I just felt like it could’ve been better, y’know. If you’re thinking of playing this for the first time or you have played and are unable to play your original copy, then I can recommend. For those that still play the original, you might want to wait for a sale.
