Feeling nostalgic for games like Endless Ocean for the Wii, I assumed it would be similar and bought it. In Other Waters is not Endless Ocean, or really anything like any other game. It’s not a visual novel, exactly, but nor is it purely a game so much as a story, and it isn’t entirely a walking simulator either, though it freely picks through all those for its framework.

The graphics are clean but utilitarian. You start out as an AI in a diving suit on the alien planet Gliese 677Cc, and must help a marine biologist named Ellery Vas navigate the alien waters and uncover its mysteries. If you’re not a fan of reading, I would suggest turning back. While the graphics are minimalistic, the writing is far from it. I’ve spent the past 9 hours reading paragraph after paragraph of descriptions of everything from alien life to random rocks. Ellery is going to write her heart out and the meat and potatoes of this game is listening to her talk and occasionally giving her yes or no answers, when you aren’t using the unusual but genius controls to guide her around.
