Super Robot Wars V is a tactical role-playing video game. The game is released as part of Super Robot Wars 25th anniversary and it is the eight standalone entry to the series since Super Robot Wars NEO with main focus on massive crossover between different mecha anime series. Like the previous versions of Super Robot Wars, Super Robot War V is a strategic and tactical RPG game follows the same basic structure when the stage begins. You will receive introductory dialogue between playable characters leading to the scenario on the battlefield. In order to complete a particular scenario you have to complete scenario objectives. Some scenarios have multi-part objectives as the game unfolds.

In Super Robot Wars V you have to take turns to order your unit with commands available such as movements, attacking, forming squad commands and casting spirit commands. Spirit commands are a set of special magic like spells. Once the scenario is cleared, more dialogues will be provided to the characters before you are taken to an intermission menu. Here units are upgraded and optional parts are installed. Here character’s stats and skills can be changed and other maintenance action can be performed before you can further continue with the game. Newer gameplay elements are also brought to the game, with the introduction of the Beginner’s mode. A new skill mode and skill function are also introduced to the game.

Super Robots Wars V also introduces a new gameplay mechanics namely Extra Order and Extra Action. Extra action allows you to use ExC points in each stage to gain an advantage in battle while the Extra Action allows battleship units to raise spirits of each unit.
