I will warn you – as someone who played the game semi-competitively in it’s hayday, the online is not very welcoming. You will get trashed by people that have had over 5 years to practice and play. As with any fighter, there’s a strong learning curve and UMVC3 is the definition of “touch of death” combos. The game is very, very fast in comparison to other fighters. I don’t want to act like this game’s perfect – it’s not. Vergil is still in the game and it’s more or less unpatched since the last update we had on consoles. There’s alot of broken things in the game, I would not pick this up expecting the world’s most balanced and competitive game.

There is also very little single player content. I would not pick this up if you don’t plan to play online. The roster is fantastic.  There’s alot of fun, obscure picks that I think really flesh the game out. While a smaller cast than MVC2, everyone in the game feels complete and full. The fanservice in the game is plentiful, unique dialogue and costumes really make the game feel like a pulpy comic book in the best way. The actual fightan is fast and frantic. The amount of crazy things you can pull off in game is astonishing, and not just from the x-men in the cast :^)

I’m going to refrain from endless comparisons to Marvel VS Capcom Infinite. But that’s not to put down Marvel VS Capcom 3, by any means. On top of being one of the most beautiful games of the previous console generation, the game’s complex gameplay and diverse roster are more than enough reasons for it to be a favourite among both casuals and the FGC. While the roster has its questionable choices (M.O.D.O.K getting in over Gambit and Firebrand getting in over Gene are decisions I still question to this day), the majority of the roster is strong and manage to feel distinct and incredibly fun to play. Big ups to the inclusions of Dante, Vergil, Trish, Zero and Dormammu.

That’s not to say the game’s without issues though, most importantly those to do with balance. You’ll be getting hit by the much malinged touch-of-death combos and having a surefire victory turned around due to Dark Phoenix, Morrigan, Vergil or Zero utilising Level 3 X-Factor more often than not when you decide to play online… if you find anyone to begin with. As is the norm with PC fighting games, the online community tends to come and go at their leisure, so you’ll ever find a game in the snap of a finger, or be stuck refreshing for ages. I’m almost always the latter, and it sucks. My advise’d be the same as if you were going to pick up SF5, MVCI, DBF, or what have you: It’s better to have friends so you have people you know you can find games with.

But still, with a great diverse roster, beautiful visuals and a rocking OST, I can’t recommend UMVC3 enough. I may not find it as much fun as MVCI looking back (the tag system in that game is just so damn fun), but as a game, it’s the better product. Not to sleep on Infinite, but that’s a topic for another day…
