There is nothing definitively wrong with what happened.
Despite how some find the circumstances of the story absurd. It’s really not when you actually think about the way things are laid out. It was a nuclear strike so death would be largely random. The trash of modern society will still be here and create opportunity for them to become leaders in the new world. That’s what happens to Hope County. A cringe morale relativistic millennial society fills in what was Hope County. The scenario plays out differently elsewhere as indicated. Other places are more stable and better off. This is why your character comes to Hope County.
